Three decades, two generations, one HOYS class
It was a case of family history repeating itself at HOYS yesterday (8 October) when Roberty Murphy won the Leading Pony Showjumper of the Year title – 30 years to the day that his father Peter won it.
Right track
“It’s good to see I’m doing similar to what my dad was doing at my age.” said Robert. “Both mum and dad were very successful – and I’m on the right track.”
Olympic gold medallist Peter Charles has also passed on his talent on to his children, as his son Harry won the class in 2014, and this year his daughter Scarlett was third riding Aroldo (42.43sec).
Robert and Rainbows Mocha were the clear leaders with a fast time of 40.89sec. Jessica Hewitt and Amman Valley Santino placed second on 41.57sec.
Few risks
“It was a bit nerve wracking,” said Robert. “Dad said I had to take few risks to get a high placing, so that’s what I did.”
The 14-year-old from Preston hopes to follow in his father’s footstep, but says he still has to find time for his school work.
“As soon as I get home from school I get changed, ride and do jobs on yard,” he said. “Then I come back home and do my school work. I do miss a few days to compete, but they’re very good about letting me out.”
