A foal by legendary racehorse Frankel has been sold at auction today (Monday 16 June) along with his dam for a cool £1.15m.

Winning bid

Only the super rich were in the running to buy the youngster, with the auction price starting at £1m. The eventual winning bidder was leading Irish bloodstock owner John Magnier from the Coolmore Stud.

As well as the three-month-old colt, who is as yet unnamed, the sale included the colt’s dam, Crystal Maze, who is once again in foal to Frankel.

Final lot

The mare and colt were the final lot at the inaugural Goffs London Sale in association with QIPCO, which was held at Kensington Palace in London.

“He is a very handsome colt with huge presence and great action,” said David Redvers, owner and manager of Tweenhills Stud, ahead of the auction.

“He has what I would call a typical Frankel temperament in that he knows he is special and really owns the show. At this stage he looks like a speedy type, which is no surprise given his mother has bred some excellent sprint winners.”

Star

Frankel became one of the most sought-after stallions when he retired unbeaten from the racetrack in 2012. He now stands at Banstead Manor Stud and commands a stud fee of £125,000.

Since going to stud, Frankel has attracted some of racing’s best mares. There’s now a two-year wait to find out if any of their resulting offspring will come close to matching their father’s talent.
