Andrew Nicholson still at stalemate with ESNZ

Eventer Andrew Nicholson could miss out on a place at the next Olympics, after reportedly insisting on a “number of special conditions” before competing for his country.

‘Fell far short’

Andrew’s National Federation, Equestrian Sports New Zealand (ESNZ), released a statement in response to comments Andrew madeduring a radio interview earlier this week (23 April). It confirmed the six-time Olympian remains excluded from its high performance squad because he has “not been prepared” to meet certain standards required of its members.

Andrew withdrew from the New Zealand team in November 2014 following an altercation with a team vet at the World Equestrian Games, when his horse Nereo was left unattended after the cross-country.

ESNZ stated Andrew’s behaviour “fell far short” of what is expected from their team. According to the organisation they have tried to resolve the situation, but Andrew has since requested a number of conditions before he re-joins the squad.

‘Door is open’

“These include not working with some members of the team management and being allowed to operate outside the team as an individual,” said Vicki Glynn, ESNZ chief executive

“This is not feasible in a team environment where all the riders must work closely together with team management to get the best results, and consequently this leaves no way to go forward with him in the squad at present.”

ESNZ said the “door is still open” to Andrew as long as he agrees to “sign up and abide by the rules” and work as part of the team.

Move forward

“There is no question that Andrew is an outstanding rider, but our role is to look out for the whole team,” said Vicki. “No one member is more important than the whole, no matter who that person is or what their track record is in the sport”.

ESNZ has suggested ways for them all to move forward, and until Andrew agrees to their stipulations he won’t be allowed back on the squad. It is now up to the eventer to make the next move.
