Nicholson aiming for a hat-trick at Barbury

As Barbury International Horse Trials kicks off today (3 July), Andrew Nicholson is aiming for his third consecutive win there.

Go for a hat-trick

Last year Andrew and Avebury were the joint winners, along with Piggy French and Tinkas Time. While in 2012 he managed a one-two, with Avebury taking the top spot once again and Quimbo coming second.

“Avebury is very well and the intention this weekend at Barbury is to go for the hat-trick with him,” said the world number two. “Barbury is a great event for the competitors and spectators. I am bringing as many horses as I can as the cross-country is also good to educate the youngsters.It’s going to be busy weekend, I ride six dressage tests on Thursday!”

Andrew’s team mate Sir Mark Todd at the up-coming World Equestrian Games (WEG) is also entered with three horses, which include his WEG ride Leonidas II.

Galloping course

“Barbury’s track is a lovely galloping course and a test for horse and rider whilst the going tends to be good for this time of year,” said Mark. “This weekend is an important part of our countdown to WEG with Leonidas, whilst I also have some nice two star horses competing”.

Mark is one of four eventers taking part in the inaugural JCB Champions Challenge on Saturday, when they will go head-to-head with top jockeys around a specially designed course.

“I am looking forward to giving the jockey’s team a run for their money!” said Mark.

Eventing and more

Other competitions alongside the three-star eventing include showjumping, the Retraining of Racehorses Championships, and a demonstration from Para-dressage rider Ed Chanin and Laura Collett riding Kauto Star.
