Victoria Pendleton eighth in racing debut

Double Olympic cycling champion Victoria Pendleton has made her horse racing debut, coming eighth in a Flat race at Newbury.

Incredible feeling

Victoria was riding Mighty Mambo in the 1m 5f George Frewer Charity Race for amateur jockeys.

“It’s the most incredible feeling,” she said. “Nothing compares to cantering or galloping a horse. I feel like I’m developing as an athlete by doing this.”

Fellow Olympian Mark Todd was also racing for the first time, and he finished in fifth place.

Victoria only started riding in Marchbut has received training from the very best with eventing performance manager Yogi Breisner teaching her the basics. Lawney Hill, who trained Mighty Mambo, has also been lending a hand with racing tactics.

Amateur license

“I’ve already started schooling over small brush fences – I love that,” said Victoria. “It’s the best feeling ever!”

The 34-year-old, who retired after London 2012, is now hoping to get her amateur jockey licence in August. Her ultimate aim is to ride in the Foxhunters Chase at Cheltenham Festival in 2016.
