Redwings to merge with Scottish rescue centre

Redwings Horse Sanctuary is celebrating its 30th anniversary by joining forces with Scotland’s biggest equine rescue centre.

Mountains Animal Sanctuary was founded in 1982by the late Alan Fraser, a former racing car driver. It is currently home to 98 rescued horses, ponies and donkeys, which are kept on 220 acres in Forfar in Angus.

The merger is expected to take place in the next two weeks, when the Scottish charity will take on the new nameRedwings Mountains.

“We are confident that the work of our founder can be continued with the support of this highly respected equine charity, and that the welfare needs of horses, ponies and donkeys in Scotland will be met thanks to the caring and compassionate ethos of the Redwings Mountains staff and volunteers,” said Ian Hunter, chairman of Mountains’ trustees.

Helping more horses

Redwings is the largest horse sanctuary in Britain, with 1300 horses in its care. However, until this merger all of its nine centres were in England. The charity isalso discussing a merger with the Society for the Welfare of Horses and Ponies (SWHP), with a view to Redwings securing a centre in Wales.

“The timing is right for Redwings in our thirtieth year to expand our horizons over the border and we look forward to meeting the local community and of course being in a position to help even more horses in desperate need,” said Redwings chief executive Lynn Cutress.
