Former British Showjumping chairman dies

Former British Showjumping Chairman Michael Mac has passed away at the age of 52, following a lengthy battle with cancer.

Showjumping stalwart

Michael had been involved in showjumping all his life. After coming up through the pony ranks, he then won individual gold at the Junior European Championships. In the 1980s, he represented Great Britain on a number of senior teams.

He retired from competitive riding at the age of 24 years to focus on his career as an insurance broker. He remained involved with British Showjumping, firstly as a Committee Member and later as an Executive Board Member.

Chairman

In 2005, Michael was made Chairman of British Showjumping, a post he held until last year. During his chairmanship, he worked hard to modernise the sport, believing that showjumping must evolve if it was to survive in the 21st century.

Despite his illness, Michael returned to competition last summer with his horse Competitive Edge, on whom he competed in British Novice and Discovery classes.

Michael leaves behind his wife Emma and their two young children Sienna and Jack, alongside his two older children Westley and Jenna.

Strength

“We have lost today, not only an innovator for our sport but also a man whose strength knew no bounds,” said Les Harris, current Chairman of British Showjumping. “He knew what he wanted to achieve and he was unwavering in his delivery of this.His strength and backbone was second to none as was his compassion and understanding.

“I talk not only for myself, but also for everyone at British Showjumping when I say that I feel privileged to have known him and that I will miss him in many aspects.Words are not enough to convey our heartfelt thoughts for Emma and children Jenna, Westley, Sienna and Jack at this extremely sad time.”
