Award given to saviour of 20,000 orphan foals

A philanthropist involved in the fostering of more than 20,000 foals has been given the British Equine Veterinary Association (BEVA) Welfare Award 2015.

Improving welfare

Johanna Vardon started the National Foaling Bank in Shropshire over 50 years ago. She provides a nationwide adoption service for orphan foals, by matching them with a suitable foster mare who has lost her own foal.

Johanna also takes on any problem that “breeders are unable to cope with” and offers advice and guidance on a 24-hours-a-day, seven days a week.

The award, which is sponsored by the Blue Cross, was introduced by BEVA in 2000. It recognises contributions made by vets and other people working to improve equine welfare.

Outstanding support

It was presented toJohanna Vardonat the BEVA Annual Congress in Liverpool on 10September 2015, by Blue Cross chairman Tim Porter.

“Johanna has worked tirelessly over many years to save the lives of orphaned foals and alleviate the distress of bereft mares,” said Tim. “In so doing she has given outstanding support and wise advice to countless owners, often at very short notice at all hours.

“I am delighted to present the BEVA Welfare Award 2015 to such a deserving individual and offer many congratulations.”
