Philipp Weishaupt wins Rolex Grand Prix at Spruce Meadows

Philipp Weishaupt has won the Rolex Grand Prix at Spruce Meadows in Canada, which puts him in contention for the €1m bonus.

‘Incredible quality’

The German rider and 10-year-old LB Convall was the only combination to jump a double clear over the tough course.

“It is impossible to describe the feeling of winning here in words,” said Philipp. “My sincere thanks go to my horse LB Convall, without him I certainly wouldn’t be standing here as the winner. He has simply incredible quality.”

Portugal’s Luciana Diniz was second with Fit For Fun 13, while American rider McLain Ward was third riding HH Azur.

‘Sensational’

This is the second time the 32-year-old has taken one of three Major titles in the Rolex Grand Slam, as he won the Rolex Grand Prix at CHIO Aachen last year. However, as these aren’t consecutive wins they don’t count towards the Rolex Grand Slam bonus.

Philipp must now win at Geneva in December and again at Aachen next year to claim the elusive €1m bonus.

“What Scott Brash pulled off two years ago, namely three Major victories in a row, was sensational and probably no one will be able to repeat this feat in a hurry,” said Philipp. “But I will certainly concentrate all my energy on trying to do so.”

Big bonus

Scott has won the Grand Prix at the Spruce Meadows ‘Masters’ for the past two years, but was unable to achieve a hat trick after Ursula had one down in the first round.

Poles also fell for Grégory Wathelet, who was in the running for the big bonus after winning at Aachen this year. However, his hopes of claiming a second consecutive Major title were scuppered when Eldorado van het Vijverhof picked up eight faults.
