Horse charity appeals for CCTV in all equine slaughterhouses

World Horse Welfare charity is campaigning for CCTV to be setup in equine slaughterhouses across the UK in an effort to improve the welfare standards of horses before their lives are ended.

The charity is urging supporters to sign the petition and put pressure on the government to place CCTV or recording equipment in all the horse abattoirs.

According to World Horse Welfare, more than 90% of people would not use a slaughterhouse to end a horses life, however, half of them would consider the option if measures were in place to monitor the animals welfare beforehand. For most horse owners, ending a horse’s life through a different method can prove costly.

World Horse Welfare Chief Executive, Roly Owers hopes the campaign will be accepted.

“If CCTV or other recording technology is made a legal requirement in all equine slaughterhouses now and in the future, we can remove some of the ‘taboo’ around the subject and restore public confidence in slaughter as a humane and viable option,” he said.

As well as improving the welfare standards, Roly explains how the appeal could affect other areas.

“Recording could also provide a basis for training slaughterhouse staff, further improving their competence and the process to ensure horse welfare is considered throughout,” he said.
