Endangered zebra born on New Year’s Day

Christmas is over, you’re back at work and it’s cold and grey outside… but H&C is here to bring you a little joy with news of the arrival of an endangered zebra foal.

Doing great

The Grevy’s zebra colt was born at Denver Zoo in Colorado, early on New Year’s Day, and according to the zookeepers he is “doing great”.

He hasn’t been let out outdoors yet due to a cold snap in Colorado, but it is hoped the foal will soon be introduced to the herd.

“He is strong, eats well and is very active,” a spokesperson for Denver Zoo told H&C. “Unfortunately because of all the ice and snow we’ve been getting lately, zookeepers haven’t felt comfortable letting him into his yard, fearing he will slip and hurt himself.”

Unique stripes

This is the second foal for 17-year-old Crestone, who gave birth to a colt called Summit in August 2013.

The new arrival has yet to be named, as the zoo plans to hold a naming competition.

The Grevy’s zebra is the world’s largest wild equid and the most endangered species of zebra, with only around 2,000 living in the wild.

It is distinguished by its narrow stripes, which are as unique as human fingerprints, and white belly.
