Tina Cook loses her top horse to infection

Tina Cook has lost her top horse De Novo News, after he failed to recover from a respiratoryinfection he caught while travelling.

Signs of recovery

The 12-year-old was on his way home from competing in Strzegom, Poland in August when he caught pleural pneumonia.

The horse was taken to a hospital in Newmarket where he was given a 10 percent chance of survival. However, he began to show signs of recovery and it looked like he would pull through.

Sadly, the infection then spread to his joints and he had to be put down.

Tina bred and produced ‘Herman’ herself at her yard in West Sussex. He was out of Last News and Tina’s top mare Douce De Longvaut.

Condolences

Yogi Breisner, Eventing Performance Manager commented to British Eventing: “We are extremely sad to learn of Tina and owner Jim Chromiak’s loss of De Novo News. ‘Herman’ was a wonderful horse who had so much potential.”I know he was particularly special to Tina since she bred him and rode his mother at four star level. My thoughts are with all connected to him.”

Shipping fever

Herman took her to the 2014 World Equestrian Gamesin France where the team won silver and he was a reserve for the Europeans at Blair Castle earlier this year.

Pleural pneumonia, which is also known as ‘shipping fever’, is a respiratory infection that affects the lungs. It most often occurs when horses are travelling, due to stress, lack of ventilation, and the fact that horses aren’t able stretch out their necks and clear mucus from their respiratory system.

However, Tinatook regular breaks on the journery and theother horses on the lorry returned home in good health.
