Showing champions shine on Hickstead Derby day
It’s not only showjumping you’ll get to see at the All England Jumping Course on Derby Day, as today’s showing classes have produced a selection of eye-catching champions.
The hunters impress
The Alltech Supreme Hunter Championship once again proved a tough class to win, with previous winners including the likes of showing expert Jayne Ross.
Oliver Hood was crowned champion this year with the bay gelding Potters Ace.
A mix of hunters took to the arena but judges chose the middleweight as their winner, with the heavy weight horse Lord John picking up reserve with Justine Armstrong-Small.
Stylish ladies
The ladies took centre stage in the Hickstead Ladies Side Saddle Classic, with a dozen horses contesting the championship.
Esther Rostron and her own horse Penstrumbly Our Abram took the title in convincing style.
The chestnut veteran, who looked in magnificent condition, impressed the Hickstead’s judges enough to claim the top spot.
“He rises to the occasion and as soon as he goes in the arena he pricks his ears and knows exactly what to do,” said Esther.
The pair are enjoying a fabulous time in the show ring after winning at South of England and taking fourth spot at Windsor earlier this year.
Classy coloureds
Ian Smeeth was crowned champion of the Ready Supp Supreme Coloured Horse Ridden class with the six-year-old skewbald gelding Esquire.
Owned by Sarah Gallagher, the coloured champion qualifies as both a ridden coloured and cob at Hickstead’s Royal International meeting in July.
Talking after his win, Ian said he was delighted for Esquire.
“It’s lovely to see him reach his full potential, we all love him and he’s such a character,” he said.
‘Hugo’ as he is known at home, has given owner Sarah a lot to look forward to.
“The lady that owns him is in her 70s and she rides him at home at Windsor Great Park,” said Ian.
