Abdullah Al Sharbatly seizes Grand Prix title in Shanghai
Thousands of spectators packed the stands in Shanghai last weekend as the Longines Global Champions Tour series returned to China for a third year, where Abdullah Al Sharbartly took the top prize.
Best horse
The Grand Prix boasted a prizefund of $485 000 attracting entries from many of the world’s best riders – who put on a showcase of breathtaking jumping and precision riding.
But none could better the time of Saudi Arabia’s Abdullah Al Sharbartly who finished top with Tobalio. A brave stag-like leap at the final fence saw them nail the jump-off with a time of 41.97sec.
“I’m really happy to be in this great event with a great crowd – the atmosphere is unbelievable ” enthused Abdullah “Tobalio is my best horse – he is amazing.”
Placings
German rider Marco Kutscher finished in second with Van Gogh while the Netherlands’ Marc Houtzager took third with Sterrehof’s Calimero.
Christian Ahlmann is now ranking leader with 129 points with Emanuele Gaudiano second with 96 and Britain’s John Whitaker close by in third with 85 points overall.
Intense
This fourth leg of the series also saw some epic teamwork within the Global Champions League competition.
There was a magnificent win for the Cascais Charms with young German riders Andreas Kreuzer and David Will pairing up to win. “It’s an unbelievable experience for all of us. It’s a totally different feeling to ride in this type of competition ” explained Kreuzer.
The team now ranks fourth overall behind leaders Valkenswaard United (100 points) Monaco Aces (96 points) and Antwerp Diamonds (89 points).
The GCT and GCL competitions continue this week with a return to Europe for the fifth round held in Hamburg.
