Rider paralysed in fall home for Christmas
A rider who was left brain damaged after falling from her horse has come home in time for Christmas.
24-hour care
Lindsey Broomhead was out hacking when her horse Murphy was spooked by a group of boys who threw stones at him. The fall has left her unable to walk, talk, eat or drink.
Following 19 months of rehabilitation in hospital, Lindesy is now able to live at home in Rotherham with her daughter Kayden (10), son Corey (six) and her parents.
The 30-year-old still requires 24-hour care and communicates bytyping on an iPad.
Close-knit family
“The best thing about coming home is being with my kids and family,” Lindsey told H&C. “I live day to day but as long as my kids, nieces, family and friends are happy and healthy I ask no more.”
“I need to thank so many people, past and present – so thank you so much.”
Murphy is being looked after by Lindsey’s friend Sarah-Jane Binder-Swash, who runs the yard where he is kept. Sadly Lindsey hasn’t been able to visit her horse for several months due to infections, which saw her re-admitted to a High Dependency Unit.
Pony-mad daughter
“The family are currently waiting for a car that Lindsey will be able to get into with her chair, so she can come up to the farm,” said Sarah-Jane. “Her daughter is following in her mum’s footsteps and comes here each Sunday to see Murphy and her pony, and she helps muck out and make up feeds and haynets.
“Lindsey would have loved to come up with her, but at the moment she just hasn’t been able to as the infections have kept her away.”
The boys involved in the attack have never been found.
