Racehorse sculpted at Chelsea Flower Show

A life-sized statue of Classic winning racehorse Makfi is to be created, live at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show 2014.

Clay mould

Internationally acclaimed animal sculptor Edward Waiteswill work on a clay mould of the stallion, who won the 2000 Guineas at Newmarket in 2010 and now stands at Tweenhills Stud in Gloucestershire. The model will be cast in full bronze at a later date, ready for the Qatari Royal Family, who own the horse.

Visitors to Gladwell & Patterson stand (SR44) will also be able to talk to the sculptor as he works.

Great presence

“After spending time with Makfi, I was inspired to sculpt him as he is a beautiful stallion with great presence,” said Waites, who has been commissioned by a number of royals, including the Queen. “I loved his cheeky nature combined with his handsome head and wide jaw.

“I am hoping to capture all these aspects of him to truly bring his character out in my sculpture. Exhibiting at the Chelsea Flower show is a great opportunity for me to demonstrate the art of sculpture and how these big bronzes are created”.

The Chelsea Flower Show runs from 20-24 May.
