Nick Skelton aiming for individual honours in Rio finale

Britain’s Nick Skelton and Big Star are in the gold medal position going into the final showjumping round in Rio.

Both Nick and Ben Maher qualified for today’s competition by finishing in the top 35. With Nick going clear and Ben and Tic Tac finishing on just four faults, both have made it through the final round.

The scores carry over from round one, and there were 12 other riders who went clear as well as Nick, so it’s very likely the medallists will come from one of these riders and not the four-faulters.

We could well see a jump-off for individual honours, if any of the 13 who jumped clear in round one do so again in round two.

Just one fence cost Nick and Big Star an individual medal in London 2012. Four years later, they have a chance to make up for that – and the entire of Britain will be willing them on to jump clear.

If 58-year-old Nick can win a medal, on a horse who has bounced back from injury, what a story it will be for Team GB, and what an ending to the equestrian events of Rio 2016.
