Leading Lauras team up to win in Madrid
Top lady riders Laura Renwick and Laura Kraut teamed up to win at the Global Champions League in Madrid.
Intense
Held for the first time in the Spanish capital thousands of spectators packed out the stands for the sixth leg of the Longines Global Champions Tour.
British rider Laura Renwick and the USA’s Laura Kraught reigned supreme as part of team Rome Gladiators winning the closely-fought competition.
“After Laura (Kraut) did such a great job I just tried to go as fast as I could and leave the jumps up and it worked today!” said Laura Renwick after jumping double clear with her horse Bintang II.
The Rome Gladiators now hold fourth place overall in the series with 130 points in total. Competition for the top rankings on the leaderboard remain close: Valkenswaard United stay at the top with 145 points overall followed by Monaco Aces with 142 and Antwerp Diamonds at 141.
Winning streak
Laura Renwick’s winning streak in Madrid did not begin with the GCL however. Laura won an impressive two further trophies at the Longines Global Champions Tour Madrid leg with a double win on the opening day that saw her finish top in the 1.45m Volvo Trophy and the 1.50m Massimo Dutti Trophy.
The LGCT culminated in the Grand Prix with just eight riders making it through to the jump-off. In the end it was Germany’s Marcus Ehning who finished quickest of all with Pret a Tout his chestnut gelding. “I know he was a good horse but I didn’t expect him to be that good or that quick ” said Marcus.
Saudi Arabia’s Abdullah Al Sharbatly took second with Tobalio while Spain’s Eduardo Alaverz Aznar was third on home turf.
Christian Alhmann remains at the top of the rankings with 186 points followed by John Whitaker at 113 points and Harrie Smolders with 103.
