Brave pony wins top prize at Equifest

A pony found that was found suffering from horrific burns eight months ago has been named as the Rescue Pony of the Year at Equifest.

The prestigious prize was awarded at the event last weekend, which also saw seven rescue ponies find permanent new homes.

One of the biggest equine events in the country, Equifest hosted the fifth annual RSCPA and PRP Rescue Services Horse/Pony of the Year competition. Six judges were tasked with whittling down 75 entries to one overall winner.

Judged on their stories of survival, as well as their progress since being rescued, fearless yearling filly Elsa was crowned overall winner.

Elsa’s plight moved many spectators and judges to tears at the Peterborough event: found abandoned in country lane in Tyne & Wear in January, Elsa had severe burns to her legs; injuries so horrific that her muscles were exposed.

Fortunately, Elsa went on to make a miraculous recovery under RSPCA care in County Durham.

Horses from the RSPCA’s specialist equine centres in County Durham and Surrey were also brought to Equifest, in the hope of finding new owners. Seven of these animals went on to find permanent homes as a result.

“What a wonderful Equifest show this has been. From rehoming seven ponies to watching the wonderful Elsa be crowned. It’s been fantastic,” concluded RSPCA Chief Inspector Cathy Hyde.
